Pack the Plane
Alaska and Horizon plan to
help
the hungry with 5,000 bags of food
November 16, 2009
In the spirit of the season, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air hope to pack an entire Freighter — or at least a virtual Freighter — full of groceries to feed the hungry. Food collected from Dec. 1 – 20, will go to a local food back in the city where it was collected.
In the Seattle area, the food will be donated to Northwest Harvest, a charity that collects and distributes food to partner programs throughout Washington state. Collection boxes, posters and flyers will be placed in work areas starting Dec. 1.
All employees are urged to participate in this event and work groups are encouraged to develop some fun ways to take part, such as collecting certain foods depending on the day, like “Mac ’n’ Cheese Monday” or “Tuna Tuesday.” The Boise and Phoenix Reservations centers are already planning to participate and reach out into their communities to bring in additional food for the cause.
Filling a Freighter requires 5,000 bags of groceries — less than half a bag for every Alaska and Horizon employee.
Financial donations will also be accepted ($15 buys two meals for a family of three). An online link will be provided for those who want to choose this option.
